2007 05 04 – Big Trip – Day 4 – Route 50 East

Silver Sky RV Park, Eureka, Nevada. Tachometer – 762 miles

Today was a long day on the road. That road is called Route 50. It starts in California and continues across Nevada to central Utah.

 Our RV

We woke up to a cold rainy day. I went to the campground office to check road conditions and although it was snowing in the Lake Tahoe area, roads were clear and open, no chains required. We drove through to South Lake Tahoe, the rain changing to snow as we climbed over 5000 feet. The snow was light, and when it stopped the views were spectacular.

We had lunch at the Safeway parking lot and then continued our drive. After bidding farewell to California and crossing to Nevada, we took a short break at Zephyr Cove, a little beach on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. I took the girls out for 10 minutes to stretch their legs and run around for a bit. It was very cold and windy, so they were happy to get back into the RV. Ron did not want to go out. He was too busy playing with his Gameboy, a gift we got him for his birthday last month. He actually did not play too much until we got him a game more appropriate for his age “Little Einsteins”. He seems to be enjoying this game very much.

We continued driving past Carson City, the capital of Nevada (not Las Vegas) and eastward. The views were greatly enhanced by the storm clouds that brought down rain, sleet, snow and most of the time just good visibility. Population was getting scarcer the farther east we progressed, with just the two lane highway and electric lines on either side to remind us that we are in the USA 2007.

Shir and Orr behaved relatively well for a boring day of driving. We stopped at a rest area just before sunset to have supper and get the children into their jammies. Since it is Friday evening, we also lit candles and Ron made a Kiddush with grape juice. We sang some Shabbat songs and even Orr is starting to gibberish “Hayom Yom Shishi…”.

The last part of the drive was after dark, with snow/rain and no light except for the RV headlights. Thankfully it was only 30 miles to Eureka, elevation 6500 feet (same as the top of the Hermon), a small town with a small RV park at its edge.

Silver Sky RV park is just a parking lot at the side of the highway. There was no attendant so we just parked in a pot. Although there is full hookup, we did not connect to the water, as it will be below freezing tonight. It’s a good thing we have electrical hookup to power the heating. It was snowing when we got here, with about 1 inch piled up, but now it has stopped. Just for precaution I drained all the water (clean and sewage) out of the RV so that the pipes don’t get any damage if something freezes. Let’s hope it won’t get too cold here tonight.

Sweet Dreams
