Pa'rus trail

Today we drove 0 miles. The RV stayed in the campground as we ventured into Zion Park for 2 fun hikes. The weather was nice and sunny. Even Paola was warm.

We had a bothersome night though. Orr sometimes wakes up screaming as if the world is coming to an end. Her lungs work so hard that we are afraid she will wake up the entire campground, not to mention Shir and Ron that share her bed. The funny thing is that the screaming starts and ends abruptly without any visible reason that we can think of. In the morning she awakes all smiles and joviality.

We had a late start, and while Paola was preparing our stuff for a day in Zion, the kids and I had fun in the playground. All three like to swing on the “grownup” swings. Ron is learning how to swing his legs. Shir can sit for 30 minutes swinging slowly. Orr gets it after 30 seconds and moves on to the next thing.

We took a shuttle bus from the campground to the park entrance, a 3 minute ride that we could have easily walked. At the park entrance we took the Pa’rus trail. It is an easy paved 1.5 mile walk along Virgin River (the river of Zion Canyon) with great views of the Canyon walls. It was not even noon but we were getting hot so we found a nice sandy spot on the river and fooled around for a while. Orr got herself all wet within 5 minutes. We then continued on the trail, which Ron decided is an elephant’s trunk. Every rock that he could climb on the trail has his footsteps tonight. Orr fell asleep in the stroller rather quickly, but Shir was adamant about not missing out on any part of the walk. We ended the nice stroll and then took the shuttle bus to the end of the Canyon, for a 2 mile Riverside walk that reaches the end of the “tourist” part of the canyon. Continuing from there is the “Narrows” a very narrow 16 mile hike that is mostly wading through chest high river water. Shir was still awake but very tired and crying. Finally she fell asleep and Ron as well. Orr walked a bit and spent most of the time on my shoulders. The walk was very pretty with the Virgin River running alongside the path. The squirrels along the trail were very friendly, and signs at the beginning of the trail warned not to feed the animals. Nonetheless, Orr and Shir’s excitement at each sighting did not diminish even after the 10th squirrel.

When we completed the walk, we took the shuttle back to the visitor center at the park entrance. Walking out of the park we were all starved (it was after 4pm). We stopped at the first café just outside the park and had a quick and OK meal. I drank a pint of local Zion stout which was not too bad.

We walked back to the campground and headed straight for the playground. Paola turned the air conditioning on in the RV and brought bubble blowers to the park. The joy kids get per bubble blown never ceases to amaze me.

Tomorrow is going to be even warmer than today, and I think we will start dressing accordingly. Today we still had the memories of cold. I guess we needed to thaw out. We plan to spend another 2 or 3 days here in Zion and cover a few more easy hikes each day.

That’s all.

Good night.
