Canyonlands RV Campground, Moab, Utah. Tachometer – 1970 miles

Today we moved back to the first campground which is much nicer. Why did we move in the first place? they did not have room for us last night. Our day’s travel took us to Canyonlands National Park. This park is divided in to 4 parts or districts, each has its own personality. For RVs, only 2 are accessible. Today we visited Island in the Sky which is “trapped†between the Colorado river on the east and Green River on the west. At their point of confluence (joining) and to the south is the Needles district (we’ll be there tomorrow). Getting to Island is 35 miles from Moab and is mostly plateau viewing down into the canyons. Very pretty, but few hiking options for us.
We drove to the major view points and oohed and ahhhed. The sun was out so the noon light was hazy and did not provide very clear views far out. Still, it was impressive. In the early afternoon we walked a half mile trail to Mesa Arch. We did not take the stroller and the girls walked nicely about half the way. The second half started to rain a bit, and we did not want to take a chance on getting wet, so the girls were in our hands. The arch itself is very nice (see pictures) and through it you can see the canyons below and some buttes and mesas.
After the hike we started heading back to Moab and on the way stopped by Dead Horse State Park. This is a really tiny park but it has a unique offering. A small plateau that is reached by driving through a very narrow (30 meter) neck, all around it a sheer drop of 2000 feet to the canyons below. The viewpoint to the south is very beautiful. Legend has it that cowboys used to corral wild mustangs to this spot, driving them in through the narrow passage and then blocking it off with branches and rocks. After choosing the best horsed for themselves they left the other horses all alone. Since they did not know how to get off this little island, they died of thirst (or madness ?!?) running around in circles on this little island.
We got back to Moab and decided to eat in a restaurant for a change. We had a lovely and tasty dinner at Center Café, just one block off of Main street. The kids enjoyed because above the white cotton tablecloths there was a paper covering and they were given crayons to draw all over it. Ron drew and arch!
We are now back at our “old†campground for a last night here in Moab. Tomorrow we have to drive 60 miles to get to the “Needles†part of Canyonlands, so we will probably stay in that area for the night. After that we may stick around south eastern Utah for a few more days before heading east to Colorado’s Mesa Verde park. I doubt we will have cellphone coverage or internet for the next few days.
Good Night,
-Hemi
