Mary’s Lake Campground, Estes Park, Colorado. Tachometer – 2959 miles

Today we felt for the first time what holiday season means. The park was full of people and cars. There was a long line just to get in past the park entrance point. We wanted to hike to Cub Lake but the parking lot near the trailhead was so full that even if we were in a regular car and not an RV we wouldn’t have been able to park.
So we drove to another nice location called Sprague Lake and after lunch we took a leisurely half mile stroll around it. We stopped along the way to see a duck family, to throw rocks into the water, and to play around. The views from the lake are gorgeous, with snowy mountain peaks overlooking us.
In the afternoon we decided that we need to get away from the crowded areas so we drove to a more secluded part of the park called Wild Basin. Unfortunately all the activities there are long hikes. But we did fid a great picnic spot all to ourselves. The kids ran about freely as I prepared a hearty steak dinner. We enjoyed the solitude and quiet chirping of birds and crickets, hoping that maybe some deer would pass nearby. We didn’t get that lucky and as it was getting windy, we headed back to the campground. I spent an hour with the children in the playground (on top of the hour we spent there in the morning) and it was great to see them progressing with climbing and siding. Shir slides feet first on her tummy. Orr started sliding head first on her tummy. And Ron does all sorts of tricks, including sliding headfirst on his back.
All in all we had a fun slow relaxing day. For tomorrow (Memorial Day) we need to figure out how not to get trapped with all the other tourists.
Good night,
-Hemi
