Today we finally made it to Yellowstone. The getting organized took us a while. We had to fill up gas, propane and groceries. Then another 2 hour drive through beautiful countryside and we made it to the east entrance of the park. From there it was another hour just to get to our campground because of construction work on the roads.
This park is the first national park in the world. It was commissioned in 1870 something. It is also the largest park in the US. This place is gorgeous. In the first hour we saw bison and deer in random locations on the side of the road. We checked in to the campground, which is a sardine factory. They have 400 tightly packed sites, all full. No playground, no pool. Not even a picnic table near the RV. However, it is the only campground in the park with hookups. The park is so large that we won’t be able to stay here every night.
We drove in the afternoon to hike in Natural Bridge trail, but it was closed to due to bear activity. This park has both black bear and grizzly bear populations and they, together with the bison are something both beautiful and frightening at the same time.
So we continued to West Thumb Geyser Basin. This a short boardwalk around thermal pools in varying colors. It was very beautiful, sometimes smelly. We were, however, worried that the girls would run and fall off the walkway.
From there we drove to Pumice Point, a nice spot overlooking Yosemite Lake. We enjoyed having supper overlooking the lake. By the time we got back to the campground it was already 9:30pm, and still a bit light in the sky. By the time the kids fell asleep it was close to 11pm.
Good night,
-Hemi
