Black Sand Basin, Yellowstone National Park

Shir had a bad night, but aside a cursed predawn hour where both Paola and I tried to comfort her, it was a long sleepful night. We tried to get ourselves organized early, but it was only 10:30 when we finally left the campground. We drove up through the north end of the Teton Park and into Yellowstone. By now, Yellowstone seems like a familiar neighborhood to us.

The kids started to itch near Old Faithful, and we stopped for lunch and a final geothermal tour at Black Sand Basin. A ranger was wrapping up a talk there and Ron asked her a question about the spider he saw in one of the pictures explaining a hot spring. Turns out the spiders feed off fly eggs which are laid on the warm and caressing crusts of the hot springs. The ranger looked familiar to me, turns out we met in Death Valley in early April, and she told us that at her age, in the summer she goes up to Yellowstone. Funny that we met here as well.

We continued driving northward to Mammoth Hot Springs, where I wanted to do another short tour, but all three kids were sleeping so we exited Yellowstone into Montana and continued to drive up to Bozeman. We stopped one more time when the kids woke up for some healthy snacks and then reached this campground at 6pm.

Bozeman is very hot. It was 31 degrees when we got here. I took the kids to a splash zone near the swimming pool, but their initial excitement was dampened (pun intended) as they got closer to the shpritz. A few minutes later they settled for the good old swimming pool. We had fun in the water until Shir and Orr got a little cold and needed to get dried up. Taking Shir’s swimsuit off we discovered an inconveniently timed poop that created some some extra work for us and the pool cleaning guy tomorrow morning.

At the RV site we had supper outside and then swung for a while on our own personal porch swing. A band of 10 professional beggar ducks came by to clean up after us and the children were happy to throw them the sour grapes they did not eat for desert. It’s now after 11pm and outside the weather is still nice and warm. Inside the RV it feels like an oven, partly because I just brought in 3 loads from the dryer.

Tomorrow we want to continue northwest towards Glacier National Park, but we have a few more problems with the RV that need to be attended to. Lemon.

Good night,

-Hemi
