Resting near the summit of Sulphur Mountain, Banff

We spent the day in the Banff town area. In the morning we went to the Whyte Museum, to learn about the art and history of the Canadian Rockies. We started with a heritage tour outside the museum. The knowledgable guide took us to see the homes of 2 prominent Banff families. From these homes, we learned much about Banff’s beginnings and culture. It was hard to keep Shir and Orr from trying to touch the many different artifacts lying about the room though.

It was an interesting tour but the amount of mosquitoes at the entrance to the houses was unbearable. In fact, all of Banff is infested with the little bloodsuckers. Every time we open the RV door we have a heart attack if we see one flying in.

After the houses tour we walked around the museum and saw nice works, nothing extraordinary in my opinion. At the gift shop Ron found “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, and so I read the story to the kids. We left the museum around lunchtime and found a nice Thai place to have lunch. After that Paola made some calls from a pay phone (mobile is costing us a small fortune) while I ran the kids around a bit. By the time we got into the RV, all three were pretty tired. We cruised around the residential streets till we found a parking spot AND a wifi signal. By this time Shir was asleep and Ron and Orr were on the way. The next two hours were spent updating this blog onto the web, emailing, skyping, and catching up on news. I felt like a heroine addict getting a fix…

In the afternoon we drove up to the Sulfur Mountain Gondola. An 8 minute ride took us up to a nice peak, but to get to the real top of the mountain we had to walk on a walkway another kilometer filled with up and down stairs. Shir and Orr did most of the way there on their own. They are stair junkies, whenever they see steps, they just have to climb them. The views afforded us from the top were heavenly. Too bad it was so windy or we would have stayed up there some more.

For supper we stopped at Bow River Falls, just 1 kilometer from downtown. I played with the kids near the falls while Paola prepared a tasty supper. Once again we saw many of our “cousin” families. It’s interesting because in 2 months of Parks and tourist towns, we did not hear Arabic even once, while here in Banff in the last 3 days we have seen and heard more than you would even in Yaffo.

On the way to the campground we stopped for a refill at the local Safeway. It is a huge disappointment compared to the US stores. I wonder if it is because of the location, or is Safeway just not the top grocery chain here.

I have to plan our next few days in the area, so good night for now.
