Shabbat Shalom.
This afternoon, Shir fell from a bench in the Banff Park Museum and crash landed on her left arm. She cried and we immediately noticed her arm was too curved to be right. Luckily the Banff hospital was 2 blocks away so we all dashed there by foot. By the time we got to the emergency room Shir had calmed down, but it was clear that something is wrong. The doctor and a set of X-rays showed a fracture in the middle of Shir’s left arm.
After giving her some sedative, the doctor and nurse set the bone and wrapped her arm almost up to the elbow in a cast. A purple fiberglass cast. Shir was a real trooper and cried only for a little bit. After setting the cast, she had another X-ray to see that the bone are all in place. It looked good and we were released from the hospital. 4 hours and $1200 after Shir’s fall we were back in the RV, adjusting to a new reality for the next few weeks. Luckily (?), I have some experience with broken bones, so we bathed Shir and kept her cast dry. She was a bit sensitive but still had her sense of humor and usual toddler needs near bedtime.
Other than Shir’s bad fall, today was a relaxing town day. We strolled along Cadcade Gardens for a stroll among flowers of various sorts, visited a Blackfeet Indian Teepee, and explored part of Canada’s history at Canada Place. We had lunch at an OK Greek Restaurant before naptime. The tzaziki was good, but too much garlic.
And then in the afternoon we had a very short visit to the Banff Park Museum. Right now it’s past midnight and Shir is sleeping. Every once in a while she tries to turn over and I guess the cast gets in her way. The first few days in a cast are sensitive. We need to make sure there is no swelling and that she doesn’t move her arm too much. Next week Shir will need to be X-rayed again to see that the bone is still set.
How will this affect our trip? We don’t know exactly yet. No water activities for the next month, we have to be near hospitals on a weekly basis, and other than that be more attuned to Shir for the short term. Let’s hope it’s all sunshine from here.
Good Night.
