Spirit Island, Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park

Shabbat Shalom!

We took Shir to the hospital today for a checkup on her broken arm. After another set of X-rays and doctor’s assessment, it looks like the bone is set correctly and the arm is on its way to a full recovery within 3-5 more weeks. We’ll check up again in a few weeks and maybe the cast can off then.

The hospital visit took all morning, and then another hour for me to fill out the insurance claim forms and mail them to Blue Cross. By then we had lunch and found a wi-fi signal in town to check and send emails.

The girls fell asleep and we drove towards Maligne Lake, 50km away from town. We stopped on the way because Ron wanted to sleep too, but only in his bed, not in the car seat like the girls. Sleep he didn’t but the stop gave me a chance to make some phone calls to Israel before it got too late.

We drove to Maligne Lake and got there in time for the last boat tour of the day. Maligne lake (evil lake, named by a Belgian missionary who almost drowned nearby) is the largest glacier fed lake in the rockies. It is 28km long. There is a tiny island at the halfway point that is world famous because a photo depicting it won some prize many years ago and it was blown up and posted at New York’s Grand Central Station.

The boat ride was fun and informative, lasting 90 minutes. It included a 10 minute stop near Spirit Island for photos and leg stretching. We spent the time talking with a Jewish Mexican family that was on our boat as well.

After returning we thought we’d hike a bit along the lake, but it was too hot, and we were getting hungry. We found a nice shady spot for a picnic and I prepared dinner. After eating we washed the kids and got them ready for bed. We buckled them into their car seats and hoped they would fall asleep on the drive back into Jasper.

How wrong we were. Although I was driving slow to spot wildlife, all three of the kids were wide awake and showed no interest in sleep. We did see some elk along the road, what made it even more difficult for the kids to get into a sleepy mood. The kids were still awake when we got here at 10:30pm.

I hope they’ll sleep a lot tonight. Good Night,

-Hemi
