Our campsite is very nice, on the edge of a little creek. Free canoeing is included. This morning Tzach and I took the kids on a short canoe trip that lasted 10 minutes. Each time the canoe rocked a bit, Shir and Orr would complain fearfully. After we let the kids back to shore, the 2 grown up boys managed to capsize and get all wet in the freezing water. We paddled for a bit along the creek and then got back to our fatherly duties.
We drove to Crater Lake and when we finally got to the first viewpoint it was a most remarkable sight. The lake is the deepest blue you have ever seen. It is fed solely by precipitation and snowmelt of the crater rim. It is the deepest lake in the world, or one of them at almost 600m deep. The basic idea of the park is driving around the 50km of the rim and enjoying the views of the lake.
The lake also has an island in it called Wizard Island, and a boat takes people there several times a day. To get to the boat you need to hike down steeply from the rim to the dock, 1.5km. Too much for us in the current configuration. After several more viewpoints and a late lunch, we drove to another nice attraction called the Pinnacles. Basically these are tall hollow spires created when the volcano here erupted eons ago.
We got back to the campground towards evening and continued in the ritual of a fine BBQ dinner that lasted well into darkness. The children played and ran around while the grownups drank some wine and enjoyed the atmosphere.
Good Night,
-Hemi
