Petrified Forest, Catlins

Today was a long day on the road. We covered 350km driving along the Scenic Southern Coastal Road. For most of the morning the weather was cloudy and very windy. It required a lot of work just to keep the RV straight on the road.

We stopped in the morning at Curio Bay to see a petrified forest, but it was too cold for the women and kids so Dad and I explored the sight for a bit before hitting the road again. We drove to Invercargill, which seemed like a dreary town at first. We stopped at a nice playground to let the kids stretch their legs and have lunch. We then fueled up and went to the supermarket. The big treat came next.

We parked at the Queens Park [pL:
, a sort of Central Park, if you will. We were surprised by the attractions. A rose garden, a superb playground, an aviary, a mini zoo, beautifully groomed lawns and trees. We ended up spending three hours in the park, despite the cool weather and strong winds.

Our long drive resumed and apart from a few stops here and there we drove straight to Te Anau. The vistas changed from flat farmland bordered by the sea to more mountainous terrain with rivers flowing by here and there. We reached here past 9pm but the last hour of driving in the late light was very beautiful and well worth it.

Good Night,

-Hemi
