2007 07 18 – Big Trip – Day 79 – A Wet Welcome to Vancouver

Capilano Campground, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Odometer – 7685

No Pictures 🙁

We drove the last 100km to Vancouver today on the beautiful Sea-to-Sky highway. It probably is a very pretty drive when

a) The sun is out and it is not raining

b) There is no construction work on over 80% of the road, reducing the speed limit to 30-50km/h when not standing still waiting for a construction truck to get out of the way.

So instead of 90 minutes, the drive took us twice as long and we didn’t really enjoy the view. Se la vie, as they say.

We got to Vancouver and instead of doing scenic things, we checked into the campground, which packs RVs tight as sardines. It didn’t matter because we didn’t really need to get out. The campground is in North Vancouver, just under the Lion’s Gate Bridge that leads into Stanley Park. The location is good. After lunch and an aborted attempt to take a nap, we decided to salvage part of the day and drove into town to see the Museum of Anthropology.

The museum is on the campus of the local university and we had a bit of a challenge finding parking space for the RV. We finally parked and got to the museum, a bit wet from the rain but happy at the chance to experience some culture. We spent an hour at the museum, until closing time at 5pm. They had totem poles made by local First Nations people, various masks from Africa, and an assortment of pottery from around the world.

The return drive to the campground through downtown was painfully clogged and slow, but at least we got to see part of Vancouver.

Let’s hope we’ll get some sun tomorrow.
