Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park

Today was half Canada, half USA. We started off easy at the campground on the marina in Victoria’s West Bay. Laundry, phone calls, some playtime for the kids and we were already past noon. We drove into downtown and parked at the ferry terminal. After a last visit to the streets of Victoria we went back to the RV to have lunch and wait for a US customs inspection.

The ferry ride is 90 minutes, and it goes 17 miles in a straight line from Victoria to Port Angeles. The ride was smooth at first but in the second half there were decent sized swells that caused the ship to swing from side to side. We had to hold on to Shir and Orr so they won’t lose their balance and fall. (more…)

Lunchtime, Victoria, BC

Today was a beautiful sunny day. Finally. We drove into town from last night’s campground straight to tonight’s destination. This is a new campground right on the water and is part of a marina residence project that includes houses floating on the water.

After making some phone calls we took an expensive water taxi across the harbor to downtown Victoria. There were many people out and enjoying the sun, and street performers trying to grab their eyes, hearts, and coins. (more…)

Parliament Building, Victoria, BC

We spent the day in Victoria after waking up really late this morning. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and at the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island. Named after the longest reigning monarch in the UK (63 years till 1901), this is a lovely town.

By the time we drove into town and parked it was almost noon. There was an antique car show in downtown and half the tourist streets were closed to traffic. (more…)

Buchart Gardens, Victoria, BC

We woke up to a drizzly misty morning in Tofino and were glad to get out of there as soon as we could. We drove over 300km to get to Victoria where we will spend our last few days in Canada.

On the way we made just one stop, at Cathedral Grove, which has 800 year old Douglas Firs, Cedars, and Hemlock trees. We stretched our legs on a 10 minute walk and got back to driving. The kids behaved impeccably. (more…)

Shabbat Shalom.

Today was a cloudy slightly chilly day. We spent it in entirety at the campground playground. To be more exact, the children played while either Paola or I were on watch. It was great to see them enjoy, and the weather didn’t really pick up with the day, so we ditched plans to go to the beach again. Ron found some friends to play with, and we always support that, because usually it takes him a while to warm up to other kids his age and older. (more…)

Shir enjoying the beach at Pacific Rim National Park

Today Orr and Shir are 23 months old. It’s hard to believe that next month they will celebrate 2 years! When we got up this morning, it was cold and cloudy. It looked like it would rain any minute. We left Ucluelet and drove to the Pacific Rim Park.

It was still cloudy and chilly when we started a 1km Bog Trail. (more…)

Tofino, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

We had a long drive this morning so we left the campground in Nanaimo as soon as we could. The drive starts along the eastern shore of the island and then cuts through the middle through forests, lakes, and mountains until reaching the west coast. It was very scenic. We were surprised to see snow capped mountains on the island.

About halfway through, the road became narrow and very winding, so we had to drive very slowly. (more…)

BC Ferry going to Vancouver Island

We bid Vancouver farewell this morning and headed westward to Vancouver Island. It’s a huge island, about the size of Israel and can be accessed by Ferry.

We took a cab from the hotel in downtown to the campground where we parked the RV. I breathed a sigh of relief when we got there and everything was OK. While Paola unpacked, I played with the kids in the campground playground. We then drove a few miles west to Horseshoe Bay, not before fueling up the car and our fridge. (more…)

No Pictures Today

Finally the rain stopped. As we have covered all the tourist attractions we have planned, today was set for doing locals’ attractions. We took a bus to the hip Kitsilano neighborhood on west 4th street and spent the morning walking around the many specialty shops. Paola found a good pair of hiking shoes. Ron got a kaleidoscope. Orr and Shir got some tiny winding toys that worked well for 5 minutes. I got a sushi lunch that was very tasty. Ron had some of the raw fish too, and he liked it. (more…)

Shir at Science World, Vancouver

We had a lucky break this morning and it didn’t rain. We walked over to Chinatown to visit Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Gardens. The doctor was the first leader of modern China. The Garden is the first of its kind outside of China and was constructed in 1986. It is a scholarly garden reminiscent of the Ming dynasty era, which means although it does not look too impressive, there are many delicate balances of materials, colors, plants and whatnot. We came just in time for an instructed walk, which Paola enjoyed as I overlooked the children. (more…)
