We bid Vancouver farewell this morning and headed westward to Vancouver Island. It’s a huge island, about the size of Israel and can be accessed by Ferry.

We took a cab from the hotel in downtown to the campground where we parked the RV. I breathed a sigh of relief when we got there and everything was OK. While Paola unpacked, I played with the kids in the campground playground. We then drove a few miles west to Horseshoe Bay, not before fueling up the car and our fridge.

At Horseshoe we paid $105 for the ferry ticket (RVs pay by the foot in length) and waited for the next ship. The kids fell asleep so the wait was quiet. We had a peaceful lunch for the first time on this trip and then10 minutes before the departure we drove the RV up into the ferry’s belly. There are 4 levels just for vehicles, and another 2 on top for passengers.

The ferry set off and one by one the children woke up. I took Ron up to the sundeck level. Although the sun was shining, the wind was quite strong and Ron wanted to get back down. After the children had a quick bite to eat we all went up to the main passenger deck. It has many seats, 2 restaurants, a business center, a video arcade and a play room for toddlers. We spent the rest of the voyage there. All told the trip took about 90 minutes.

We debarked in Nanaimo to a pleasant afternoon and drove directly to this campground. I took the kids to a pretty good playground here, but the slide was a bit too fast for the kids. Ron figured out that he should use his hands as brakes on the sides. By the end of the play session they were black.

We had a light supper and then went for an early evening stroll. The campground borders the water, so it was very pleasant to walk around a trail along the shoreline. Until the mosquitoes heard about us.

Tomorrow we plan to drive to the west side of the Island, to Pacific Rim National Park.
