We all slept until about 9 this morning. Ron was a bit cold at 6am so Paola turned on the heater. By the time we got up 3 hours later, the RV was like a sweatshop. The weather here in the past few days has been great, going up to 29C in the day, and down to 5-10C at night.

We took a path from the RV site that led us to Jackson Lake. We sat on the shoreline enjoying the sun, the view of the Tetons, and the children tirelessly throwing rock after rock into the water. (more…)

I got up at 4:30am and took the RV into Grand Teton Park while Paola and the children were still sleeping in the motel. On the drive up, as the early morning light started seeping in, I saw many deer and elk by the roadside, having breakfast. I even had to stop once to let a deer cross the road. Today’s hike was a 10 mile in and out climb to Garnet Canyon. I parked at Lupine Meadows trailhead and walked up through a pine forest until the canyon opened up about 2000 feet higher. On the way up I sang and talked to myself, trying to alert bears to my presence. I guess it worked cause I didn’t encounter any. There was a strange little rooster that didn’t seem to mind me right next to him though. He had all his back feathers up and then I saw the female he was courting. (more…)

Today was a laid back city day. We started off by strolling the streets around town square, visiting art galleries and such. As a comedic relief for the kids, we took a 15 minute stagecoach ride around town. The kids liked it, even though sitting inside you can’t really see the 2 horses drawing the carriage, just here their footsteps and smell their manure. (more…)

Today was a driving day. We had to cover 140 miles to get from West Yellowstone to Jackson. Most of the way was through national parks. First Yellowstone, then Grand Teton. We will return to Teto in a few days, but after a week in Yellowstone we wanted to get to Jackson, which is supposed to be a very nice town. (more…)

KOA Campground, West Yellowstone, Montana, Tachometer – 4836 miles

Today was a wasted day. We planned on driving south to Jackson but the RV company said otherwise. A tow truck cam in to take our RV to the nearest garage, which was closest to the west side of Yellowstone. The tower had room for all of us so we transferred the kids’ safety chairs to the “red truck” and the kids got excited about this change. We drove slowly for about an hour and a half, with the driver serving as a tour guide of the park for us. He is a young 20 year old guy who came to work in Yellowstone for the summer. The girls fell asleep and Ron was busy drawing, so the drive went by fast. (more…)

After 3 nights without a hookup, we are staying at a hotel here in the park. We wanted to stay in the campground here at Grant Village but it only opens next week. For $125 a night, it is a bit bare, but the kids had fun jumping on the beds when we got in. (more…)

We woke up after 9 today. The Bison left the meadow during the night. From the RV window, Ron and Shir spotted a “ground squirrel and his wife” fooling around near their hole. We got through the morning duties, always a bit slower without a hookup (no microwave to warm the milk, visit to the dump station for dumping and fresh water), and set off to see more Yellowstone. Today was a long day. A great day. Ron had a bad dream and woke us up at 4:30am. I was planning to wake up at 5, so no big deal. I spent an hour with Ron trying to get him to fall asleep but his eyes were wide open. Finally I explained to him that daddy has to go on a hike. He took it like a champ. (more…)

Today we woke up ay 9am again. Actually Ron woke up at 6 claiming sleepily that there is a horse in his bed and that he is scared. It was Shir. Luckily he returned to sleep and so did we.

Our morning hike was a 2.1 mile trail to Storm Point where we hoped to see some moose. There was one bison at the beginning of the trail. But no moose. (more…)

We started the day late, the kids all woke up close to 9am. Our first stop was the visitor center to get some information on hikes here in the park. There is so much to do.
