Near Adams Falls, Rocky Mountain National Park

We woke up at 6am to Orr’s crying. Noting calmed her down and she woke Shir up too. Paola tended to them while I tried to sleep some more but in vain, too much noise. How Ron slept through this is unclear.

We left the campground before 9am for a long day of driving. Shir and Orr fell asleep immediately. (more…)

Shabbat Shalom.
We spent some time in the campground playground this morning before heading off to the next national park. If you have never heard of it, that’s ok, neither did we until we saw that it is conveniently located on our way to the Rockies. The Gunnison is a river that flows east west here in Colorado and there is a 40 mile section that runs through a very deep gorge. At the “Black Canyon” part, for a few miles, the distance between the canyon walls is less than a mile, but the height is between 500-700 meters, which means that the river hardly gets to see any sunlight. Hence black. (more…)

Ron Climbing a 10 meter ladder to get to Balcony House in Mesa Verde National Park

We woke up to a clear and bright morning and the sun started melting away the little snow that had accumulated on our RV. We headed back to Mesa Verde for a second attempt and today was much more successful. We booked a ranger led tour of “Cliff Palace” which is one of the dwellings from ~1280. To get there we had to walk down some steep stairs and climb up a 3 meter ladder. Paola had Shir in a backpack carrier and I took Orr on my hands. Ron was totally independent. The tour was very short in distance, only 500 meters, but with the ranger explaining things it took one hour. The kids got restless very quickly and we had to keep them busy and quiet for the sake of the rest of the group. (more…)

Cliff Dwelling, Mesa Verde National Park

Today was another rainy and even snowy day. Cold and unrelenting till the day was almost over. It was raining most of the night and when we woke up as well. We took our time getting organized hoping it would let up. So we made a big breakfast with pancakes and then headed off to Mesa Verde National Park. This place has several ancient cliff dwellings that have been preserved for 1000 years. (more…)

Happy Shavuot!!!

We woke up to a cold and cloudy day. At 5:30, when my alarm went off, it was still raining, so I killed the hike plan. Bummer. Back to sleep. Heaven. It rained till about 7:30. We left the park around 10am and started a long sunless day of driving.

Our first stop, just a few mile outside the park, was Newspaper Rock. (more…)

We are spending the night inside the park in a beautiful campground with a fantastic spot for our RV. Too bad it is raining outside now. We drove out here from Moab in the morning and arrived around noon. It is 75 miles from town. This part of Canyonlands is lower than yesterday’s so we are looking up at rock formations and not down into canyons.

The first thing we did when we got here was to get a spot in the campground. As in many national parks, it’s a first come first serve system. (more…)

Green River Overlook, Canyonlands National Park

Today we moved back to the first campground which is much nicer. Why did we move in the first place? they did not have room for us last night. Our day’s travel took us to Canyonlands National Park. This park is divided in to 4 parts or districts, each has its own personality. For RVs, only 2 are accessible. Today we visited Island in the Sky which is “trapped” between the Colorado river on the east and Green River on the west. (more…)

Fiery Rurnace, Arches National park

Today we had to leave our nice campground and checked into another one before heading off to Arches once again. It’s amazing how in a few short days the place seems familiar, almost like the streets of your hometown. We drove to the “windows” part of the park where there are a few easy walks up to some arches that look like elliptical holes in the rock walls. There were a lot of stairs to climb so after a few minutes we left the stroller on the trail and continued all 5 by foot. Orr for the most part walks on the trail, fast pace and gives Paola and me a hand when asked. Shir on the other hand, is the free spirit. She refuses to hold hands, defines the trail as whatever is interesting to her, and can spend many long minutes staring at a rock, some ants, or whatever seems to amuse her. (more…)

Delicate Arch

We slept the first full night since we began our trip without child interruption tonight. The kids, having gone to bed late last night, woke up only at 9:30am! What a treat. We lazed off to the campground swimming pool before the sun will get too high in the sky. Unfortunately the water was really cold. That did not stop Orr though. After her came Ron and even Shir for a bit, but no one really wanted to get their whole body wet, just the bottom. (more…)
