Turtle Bay Exploratorium, Redding, California

Today we took even more time to get organized than yesterday. By the time we got into the cars it was past noon. We drove for about an hour into Redding where we went to visit Turtle Bay Exploration Park. It is a mix of discovery museum, playground, bird and butterfly zoo, and possibly other things that we did not get to see.

The weather outside was unwelcomingly hot, over 35C, so we headed to the air conditioned museum first. (more…)

Skull Cave, Lava Beds National Monument, California

We left Oregon today and returned to California after more than 3 months away. After a long and lazy morning, with a tasty breakfast and plenty of frolicking in the playground, we started the long drive south. We stopped in Klamath Falls for gas and groceries, the continued to an obscure park called Lava Beds. (more…)

Crater Lake, Oregon

Our campsite is very nice, on the edge of a little creek. Free canoeing is included. This morning Tzach and I took the kids on a short canoe trip that lasted 10 minutes. Each time the canoe rocked a bit, Shir and Orr would complain fearfully. After we let the kids back to shore, the 2 grown up boys managed to capsize and get all wet in the freezing water. We paddled for a bit along the creek and then got back to our fatherly duties.

We drove to Crater Lake and when we finally got to the first viewpoint it was a most remarkable sight. (more…)

Campground Near Forth Klamath, Oregon

Ron was excited today for two reason. We bought marshmallows for desert, and he was going to meet a friend later in the day. We drove a bit over 200 miles inland to the Crater Lake area and met our friends, the Segal family, who drove up from California. It was a happy reunion for all. (more…)

Oregon Dunes

The children had a fun day. We had a relative short drive down the coast and reached the Jesse Honeyman State Park which is part of a larger Oregon Sand Dunes State Recreation Area. The dunes stretch for 15 miles along the coast and 2-3 miles inland. The campground is in the state park and I have to say that for a government run establishment it is one of the top campgrounds we have visited. Full hookups, an awesome playground (Ron says), and best of all, the dunes right out the gate. (more…)

Cape Meares, Oregon Coast

We headed west to drive down the Oregon coast, which was supposed to be very pretty. After driving down over 100 miles we agree. We started on a scenic drive called the Three Capes Scenic Drive.

The first cape, called Meares has a lighthouse that we climbed up to see. The stairs were steep and narrow and we were afraid that the children would fall so we held them tight. The lighthouse, not in use since 1960, had a very expensive lens to help shine its light over 20 miles into the ocean! (more…)
